Steve will share his design approach and encourage participants to make pots scaled for the second weekend glazing and kiln pack. Eight wheels and a kick-wheel will be available. He will be encouraging participants to ask themselves what makes their work tick.
“When you have a sense of your individual pot character, you are more able to refine and adjust elements of your vessel-making to match and develop that character.”
Participants will bring bisqued pots on the first weekend to glaze with reduction glazes. These glazed pots will be packed into ‘Olive Olsen’, the wood kiln. Olive will be fired up on Saturday morning and participants will help fire her in shifts.
Participants will then process farm clay to work with over the next two days. These farm clay pots will be bisqued at Denbigh during the week between firings.
On the second weekend, glazes will be made up from African Olive (a weed) and hardwood ash from Denbigh.
Olive will be unloaded and re-loaded with the farm clay pots, glazed with the ash glazes, and wadded using shells.
Steve will fire Olive more slowly on the second weekend, side stoking for ash and slow-cooled reduction effects.
